Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics

Historical Background

The Department of Computational and Applied Mathematics was founded in 1963 with the original name Department of Numerical Methods. Chairs of the department in the past more than thirty years were: Prof. Hoang Tuy, Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Ba Hao, Assoc.Prof. Le Dinh Thinh, and Assoc.Prof. Pham Ky Anh. The present chair is Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Huu Cong (from March, 2000). The department has been playing an important role in both undergraduate and graduate education of the Hanoi University of Science. Its staff members have written and translated a lot of elementary and advanced mathematics books, contributed approx. 200 scientific papers, and cooperated in a number of applied research projects. Presently, the staff includes 2 full professors, 4 associate professors and 2 senior lecturer. Since last year, some young talented mathematicians have become new staff members and received the chance to prove themselves. They may mean a new generation for the department in the future.
